Director of Music
As Director of Music/Organist at Trinity, Andrew Birling directs the Trinity choir, the handbell choir, and plays for worship. He also works with the clergy to plan weekly worship. Mr. Birling holds a Bachelor of Music degree in organ and harpsichord performance from Lawrence University of Appleton, Wisconsin, and the Master of Sacred Music degree, organ emphasis, from Luther Seminary. His primary teachers have included Miriam Duncan, George Damp, John Ferguson, and Jamie Bobb.
In addition to organ and harpsichord studies, Mr. Birling has studied conducting with Rick Bjella, Chris Aspaas, and Anton Armstrong, and church music with Paul Westermeyer and Jamie Bobb. Over the course of his career, he has served in Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Episcopal churches in Wisconsin, Minnesota, California, and Oregon.
While in California, Mr. Birling served as a board member, sub-dean, and dean of the San Jose Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Active as a composer, he has works published with Augsburg Fortress and Hope Publishing.
When not at work, Andrew enjoys cooking and baking, and loves walking the numerous lakes and trails in the Twin Cities.
